Turn Data Into Intelligence

  • Friday, 27 October 2017 12:31

How can you turn terabytes of valuable healthcare data into knowledge that can be used to improve patient care, quality, efficiency and costs?

Using the 3M HDD, we start with multiple standard terminologies, map sets and value sets organized into knowledge-based groupings. Then we work with applications and users to leverage this rich content. We provide tools to browse, create, auto-map and integrate local terminologies, leading to customized knowledge pathways that support your specific use cases. Our extensive RESTful web services allow your applications to easily interact with the 3M HDD.

The benefits are improved decision support, meaningful data analytics, simplified data mining and unlimited flexibility.

Use Case: 3M Enhanced NLP

The 3M Enhanced NLP (eNLP) engine uses the 3M HDD as the terminology provider for concept recognition for NLP, as well as downstream applications such as eNLP for Registries, which allows a healthcare orgazation to abstract patient charts efficiently for reporting data to registries such as the American College of Cardiology's Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) Registry. The 3M HDD enables faster customization of clinical terminologies as well as quick turn around times in mapping them to standard terminologies.

Bring Order to Chaos

If each information system in your network operates in stand-alone mode, the answers you need are stranded on data islands.  You could be missing critical opportunities to measure and improve the quality of patient care, analyze resource use, and implement evidence-based medicine.

3M clinical information experts can help you understand the impact of multiple, diverse standard and local terminologies on your clinical systems, clinical data repositories, and electronic health records.  We can also recommend strategies to improve data exchange and semantic interoperability.

Use Case: Large Scale Data Standardization

The Military Health System (MHS) consists of a worldwide network of military hospitals, health clinics, the DoD’s private sector health business partners, and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. 3M has been mapping the US Department of Defense (DoD) MHS local codes for over 15 years. 3M has mapped more than a million local codes from the MHS from a wide array of health care data domains including laboratory, pharmacy, and radiology. 3M supports the DoD by providing data mapping from legacy system databases to a common reference set, the 3M HDD. This improved semantic interoperability within the MHS.

Drive Value from Data

Government healthcare initiatives are mandating a value based payment model. There are multiple quality measures required by clinical reporting programs such as Meaningful Use (MU), Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) and Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS). Managing the numerous standard terminologies and value sets to calculate these measures can be daunting.

The 3M HDD maintains terminologies and value sets that enable users to report on measures, analyze outcomes and improve quality. The 3M HDD also enables hospitals to use clinically relevant information from Certified EHR Technology (CEHRT) to identify patient-specific education resources and provide those resources to the patient. Users can also add their own terminologies, custom map sets and value sets, supporting their organizations to reach value based goals.

Use Case: Identification of Patient-Specific Education Resources

A 3M customer provides healthcare education information to medical facilities and applications. Its patient education library contains over 15,000 brochures, articles, videos and other types of materials.  3M associated (mapped) each informational material with the relevant standard terminology codes from SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm, ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS, so these codes in a patient record can “trigger” the offering of the appropriate informational material, using the mappings in the 3M HDD implemented in the customer system.
