Miles to go on interoperability

I recently had cause to wonder about the progress we’re making on the path to interoperability through “the woods” of healthcare information exchange (HIE).
  In accordance with the 21st Century Cures Act, The Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health Information Technology has released the draft version of the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA).
 Previously, in “TEFCA: A beginning for nationwide interoperability ,” we discussed the basics of the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA), an ambitious plan assembled by The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) to provide an “on-ramp” to nationwide interoperability for healthcare data.
I recently attended the June 2018 Laboratory LOINC Conference in Indianapolis to get the latest LOINC updates. I have attended many previous meetings, but this time was special. My colleague Pam Banning received this year’s LOINC Award for Distinguished Contributions!

The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) organizes a Learning Showcase during the Annual Symposium. Separate from the scientific program, the Learning Showcase allows exhibitors to present the informatics aspects or topics that relate to their products or services, avoiding a marketing or sales focus. In this context, I gave a talk on how terminologies can be used to help clinical natural language processing (NLP) during the latest AMIA Annual Symposium in November 2017, and would like to share the salient points here.
