The Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) was established by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in 1983. HCPCS used to stand for HCFA Common Procedure Coding System when CMS used to be the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) prior to June 14, 2001.
